Chris Hanson ([info]chanson) wrote,

I fucking hate this city

Meg rode her bike down from the hotel to Union Square to meet me for dinner, locking it up at a bike station right outside Borders.

After we walked back from dinner, we discovered it had been stolen. Right in the middle of dinner, right on the corner of fucking Union Square.

I fucking hate San Francisco. What a shit-hole of a city.

Will be, as soon as the conference is over. I debated leaving tonight, and just commuting for the rest of the conference. But I don't feel like having my car broken into and/or being mugged in the 5th & Mission garage.

San Francisco is like the bike theft capital of the world.

In Detroit, people have been known to have bikes stolen while they were riding them. They don't even ponder leaving them outside. Your friend wouldn't contemplate riding her bike to dinner; she probably would barely ponder going to dinner in a locked private vehicle. SF is a dream of a city, when compared with Detroit.

Things should be good or bad on their own merits. It is largely irrelevant how bad Detroit is (and it is), or whether or not it is worse that San Francisco in many (most? all?) respects (and it is). The point is that Chris feels violated (and rightly so), and is entitled to feel that way. Saying, "well, it's worse somewhere else," seems, at best, inconsiderate.

I don't yet share Chris' distain for SF (I'll probably have my bike on my mind the rest of this week, though), but I can certainly understand it.

I was down for WOWODC on the weekend, and bugged out Monday. I thought I was completely comfortable there, until I walked to Walgreens around 11pm Sunday night, and found myself leaving everything but the $15 I figured I needed for the store in the hotel, and then having walked there, cabbed it the 3 blocks back to the hotel.

I think every strange city is a bit unnerving, but I have to admit - having a bike stolen in traffic over dinner is pretty shitty.

it's not the town...

...it's the jerk that stole your bike that you fucking hate. unless it really is the town then please do leave, and take your friends with you.

Wow, anonymous, you sound just like the Christian conservatives who say "If you don't like the war in Iraq, then move to some other country."

Awesome. I guess assholes are the same no matter what their politics.

Damn, that's right outside my office, too. I think Union Square is different, though. There are a lot of tourists around here, so there's also a lot of theft (bike or otherwise) because of it. Don't get me started on walking down Powell to Market at lunch hour. You've practically gotta walk in the street.

It IS the town.

It's justifiable to hate a city in which you are flagrantly violated, and locals like the second poster find it defensible.

If you love San Francisco so much, defend based on her merits. It's the lamest and laziest thing to resort to a love-it-or-yet-out attitude.

All big cities suck this way

The bigger the city, the more crime there is and the more impersonal it is making it far less likely the thief will fear publicity while stealing. While I agree SF is crime-ridden, so are many of the larger US cities. The US has the highest murder and other crime rates among the G7. People in Japan and the EU wonder WTF is wrong with Americans to allow their society to behave this way. I wonder too and I wonder how long Americans are going to continue to put up with it. But seeing as America's poor ranking in health care, violent crime, and education, it might be a lot longer. They are, unbelievably, still deluded in thinking they are the best country in the world in most measures. And they are, sadly for them, not at all.

U-Lock or cable?

They're quick to go here unless you're using a strong U-lock. Ditto for NYC, Chicago, and elsewhere.

I've had a few people mess with mine, but only one success in SF -- luckily I got it back. (_LONG_ story, suffice to say that Crepes-a-go-go on 11th is stealing bikes)

Don't think it's San Francisco specific, not even US Specific. My bike was also stolen during while I was eating but it was in a (fucking) town in the south of France…

San Francisco IS a shit hole of a city. It's filled with delusional hypocrites that are mentally incapable of seeing it for themselves.

Bring it on

This city is a 3rd world shit hole. Bomb it and start over.

Say and blog about your ideal utopia of gay freedom and enjoy when all of the people looking for a government handout have nowhere else to go and begin attacking and stealing at any cost from the "haves."

This place should be a missle range testing facility for the military.

If you disagree then enjoy living there.

I carry a concealed weapon and will empty my clip on these drug crazed transvestite queers if they get within 5 feet of me.

San Francisco = Shit Hole

San Francisco is the worst city in the US. That's compared to Chicago where landlord disputes lead to people both freezing to death and sweltering to death.
San Francisco is cold and heartless. 1 city block is the difference between begging (for a living) in order to get $3.50 for a 40oz of beer and being a multi-millionare.
People there are mindless, they will follow you around because they are to stupid to navigate for themselves. Walk 1/2 a block down the street you'll be sure to pick up 2 or 3 morons, then feel free to lead these morons anywhere you want. I was able to drop of a nice couple in a dead end at the inside of a liquor store.
Pedistrians teeder on the edge of death every day, fortunatly for them most drivers have figured this out and know to honk and scream. When a pedistrian comes to a crosswalk they know to maybe stop if there is an obstructed path, they know to wait for a light change. After the light changes (regardless of the color/direction) they know it is time to walk again. It's surprising that more people are not hit.
Being gay in SF is not just a right, it's a privledge. I dont really mind nor care about this particular issue other than to say that it is just another f-ed up problem that is unique to this pit of hell.

Among the many baseball players and available shirts, shirts, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are definitely the most popular and sold well in recent years. These two top-selling Replica NFL jerseys (http://www.lovejerseys.com/nfl-jersey-c-65.html/) are the most duplicates. Remember to check out that there are no problems of legitimacy.
